In the 2 Acts that follow, we get to know of the Phantom, his love, his suffering and his subsequent disappearance.
Christine Daaé is a beautiful but shy opera girl who replaces the resident diva Carlotta as the star of Opera's upcoming production. Raoul, the new patron of the Opera House, remembers her from their childhood. When they meet, he invites her for dinner but she declines. In some time, Christine reveals that she owes her highly trained voice to the 'Angel of Music' who had been coaching her during the nights. Her teacher turns out to be the Phantom of the Opera, who is now in love with Christine. He hides behind a mask to hide his deformed face.
Raoul proposes to Christine and she accepts. This angers the Phantom to no end and he sets out to seek revenge. He captures Raoul and tells Christine that she can only save him if she agrees to marry him (the Phantom). She agrees but at the last minute, the dreaded Phantom has a change of heart and he sets Raoul free. Heartbroken and jilted, the Phantom simply disappears, never to return again.
